Review:
I had such a great time reading Wild for Austen! Devoney Looser offers this really fresh, engaging look at Jane Austen — the side of her that doesn’t always show up in the usual polished biographies. It made me think about Austen not just as a literary icon, but as a sharp, witty, and wonderfully complicated woman who lived with way more boldness than we tend to give her credit for.
Looser’s storytelling really brought Austen’s world to life. I loved getting a glimpse into the social circles, family dynamics, and small acts of rebellion that shaped her writing. The research is clearly impressive, but what struck me most was how personal the book felt. It reminded me that all of Austen’s clever, layered characters came from someone who was just as clever and layered herself — and maybe even a bit mischievous.
Reading this book actually made me appreciate Austen’s novels even more. I kept wanting to pick up Pride and Prejudice or Emma again to catch all the confidence and subtle humor Looser highlights.
If I had one tiny critique, it’s that a few sections felt a bit repetitive — especially when the book circled back to the same points about Austen’s independence and reputation. But honestly, it didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment. The mix of biography, insight, and genuine admiration kept me hooked the whole way through.
Wild for Austen is a fantastic read for anyone who loves Jane Austen or just enjoys stories about strong women who pushed boundaries. It’s insightful, lively, and full of heart — a perfect reminder that even our most iconic authors had a wild streak.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this one!
